Increase Online Shopping Trends For FMCG In China

Internet users in China are buying more and more products online and even the FMCG industry is enjoying the effectiveness of the new sales channel.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Apr 21, 2009 – With a huge yearly jump of 128.5% from 2007~ 2008 China’s online shopping has reached trade volume of RMB120 billion. Buying online has become one of the most preferred shopping channels for Chinese consumers. Cost and time savings plus conveniences and abundant product offerings has helped to convert regular offline shoppers to online.

What are consumers attitude toward online grocery shopping? China Polling’s recent only study on FMCG learned that only 2.5% of Internet consumers refused to shop groceries online, 60.6% of consumers either are frequent online buyers or willing to buy online in the future.

The most popular products that consumers buy online are Home Care Products, Computer & Electronics, Cloth & Accessories and Stationary. Thus, traditional grocery goods such as Cooked Food, Drinks and Fresh Goods have far less popularity.

Among all websites, Taobao is by far the most popular destination for consumers to make online purchase.

C to C platform (i.e., Taobao) is still dominating the online market; however, as online commerce matures in China, consumers are now looking for higher quality and fully packaged goods (including after-sales service). Now is great time for companies to establish its own online stores because the time is ripe for ecommerce to blossom in China.
