Students at Cate School, a local independent boarding school, were treated to a taste of musical stardom last week when Cate alumnus (class of 1968) and Grammy-award-
winning songwriter William "Billy" Steinberg visited Foundation Arts students on their Carpinteria hilltop campus. Steinberg, whose credits include numerous top-ten hits such as Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and "I'll Stand by You" as sung by Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders, spoke to young art students about the work and inspiration behind song writing.
"I started writing poetry when I was a Cate student and sang in a rock band. When I went to college, I started to write melodies to some of my poems. I found I could turn poetry into song lyrics," Steinberg explained as he urged students to draw upon their personal experiences for creative inspiration. Recently named a Cate School Distinguished Alumnus, Steinberg celebrated his 40th high school reunion with Cate classmates last year. Far from retiring, however, he continues to be active in the music industry, most recently working with rising young pop singer Ashley Tisdale on her upcoming album Guilty Pleasure.
