With over 80 million mothers in the U.S., Mother's Day disappointment is a common and often unnecessary occurrence each year on the second Sunday in May (yes, that's a reminder!). It is far more common than Father's Day disappointment, so let’s look at two simple ways to give our mothers a better holiday experience.
If you search the internet for the phrase "disappointing Mother's Day" you will find over three hundred thousand results, representing a small percentage of all mothers. A recent study from Mt. Holyoke College that said, "On average, Mother's Day celebrations last two hours longer than Father's Day celebrations, yet mothers tend to be less satisfied with their special day, according to a study comparing the two holidays..."
So what are we doing wrong? Well, some of Mother's Day disappointments come from family squabbles during Mom's special day. But most Mother's Day disappointments apparently come from receiving inappropriate gifts, or NO GIFT at all. Thus, the simple solutions to avoid most Mother's Day disappointments are clear. If everyone can just relax bit, and remember to bite their tongue for one day, we can save many mothers from having a disappointing day. And if we plan ahead and get our mothers gifts that they would actually like (heck, we could even ask her what she wants) then there will be many more happy Mother's Day moms.
With Mother's day disappointment at apparently record levels, due mostly to family squabbles and poor gift giving, the power is in our hands. We can give all of our Mom's the wonderful day that they deserve by doing what she told us to do all along: 1. Mind our manners, and 2. Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Is it any wonder that she gets disappointed when we don’t follow her instructions?
