EPA Cautions Pet Owners Using Spot-on Flea and Tick Treatments for Pets

April 17, 2009 - PRLog -- The US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and Health Canada have commenced investigations into the use of spot-on flea and tick treatments for pets.  Both agencies have seen an increase in reported incidents using spot-on flea treatments that are causing considerable concern to pet owners.  Adverse reactions have ranged from minor skin irritations to seizures.  In a number of cases, spot-on flea treatments have proven fatal to pets.

The US EPA has begun recognizing that even a number of spot-on flea treatments that are EPA registered may be causing such adverse reactions in pets.  The EPA has heightened scrutiny of such products and may pull EPA registrations on a number of pet products that are responsible for incidents involving pets and their owners.

Spot-on flea treatments are generally sold in tubes or vials in a liquid form that is applied directly to the pet's skin and fur.  Unfortunately, many of the chemicals and ingredients in spot-on flea and tick treatments can be toxic to the pets such treatments are intended to help.  Used incorrectly, spot-on flea treatments can even be deadly to pets.
