Local Business Plans on Growth in 2009

With planning, businesses can come out much stronger after the recession “The entrepreneurial spirit appears to remain strong despite the gloomy economy,” says Colorado consultant.

PRLog - Apr. 17, 2009 - GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. -- New Castle, Colorado - Forward thinking business leaders are not only managing their businesses based upon present economic conditions, but they are also planning for the future.  As Wayne Gretzky said, “Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it is”.  While it can be hard to escape the onslaught of negative news, there is opportunity hidden within this challenging economic environment.

Mr. T’s Hardware, Building Supplies, and Rental Center of New Castle has found that many consumers are cutting back and trying to save money by electing to take on projects themselves instead of hiring someone to do it for them.  It may not be surprising that Mr. T’s is one of a number of area businesses that is not only holding their own, but also doing well in this economic downturn. They and other entrepreneurs say that with focus and good business sense, it is possible to emerge from bad times relatively unscathed.  Businesses and people can even come out much stronger.

“The entrepreneurial spirit appears to remain strong in the roaring fork area, despite the gloomy world economy,” said Russell Disberger of Aspen Business Group, a local business-consulting firm.

Russell Disberger feels too often business owners get stuck in ruts, doing the same thing in the same way. “But when the economy sours,” Disberger said, “Companies need to broaden their target markets and products or offer services that might appeal to a wider audience.”  He goes on to say, “I believe Mr. T’s clearly understands this and is doing well because of it.”

“This is an opportunity for us to bring in a different level of talent,” says Russell Talbott of Mr. T’s. “It’s a real buyer’s market right now in terms of labor.  We have recently hired some very talented and market savvy salesmen, as well as our new General Manager, Mr. Bob McRae who came to us from Mich.“

Mr. McRae believes in the marketing law: A happy customer leads to three referrals, an unsatisfied customer will tell ten or more people.  With that as a guiding rule, Bob feels Mr. T’s must continually reinvent the business and figure out what their customers want.  Mr. T’s is in the process of surveying area business owners and residents of the Roaring Fork Valley to determine how Mr. T’s can best meet those needs.  Bob stated, “We are planning a complete store reset with new product and services this spring,”

Mr. T’s is keeping their business above water by offering niche products and much better service than their competition. The New Castle retail center, which employs about 30 people, has recently hired four new sales staff members to reach out to customers, business owners, and contractors.  Mr. McRae said,  “It helps to be aggressive and visible when the economy dives, unlike many businesses that tend to pull back. I feel now is the best time to ramp up our efforts to generate new business.”   This year, he expects Mr. T’s to more than double their sales.
