Follow on Google News | NKES Challenges Business Owners to Cut Energy Costs by 20 Percent‘Save Money, Save Energy, Save Jobs’ Urges NKES President
By: Eisen Marketing Group “Don’t do it for the environment, do it for an entirely different ‘green’ initiative,” Behind the cost of labor and cost of goods, energy is typically the third largest spend for a facility. Reducing this spend by as little as two percent could save hundreds if not thousands of good paying jobs across the Midwest, Wissman says, with absolutely no negative impact on a facility. Wissman says, “in many cases, there’s no cost and no negative impact on a facility in taking steps to reduce energy spend. Unfortunately, many businesses act like ostriches when it comes to this topic, and it’s not something that should be ignored. Business leaders are in the unique position to save energy, save money and save jobs – all at once.” Wissman adds that some upgrades, such as lighting retrofits, will have little to no out of pocket expense because of available government rebates and incentive programs offered through energy suppliers. These can cut a company’s energy costs by 20 to 50 percent, according to Cincinnati-based Duke Energy. For example, if a business spends $1M annually on energy, these low cost programs can realize savings upwards of $500,000 – the equivalent of nearly 15 full time jobs. In 2006, businesses in the State of Wisconsin saved more than $17 million through energy efficiency programs offered by the state. New York’s similar Energy Smart program has created 4,200 jobs since 2002, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Wissman urges businesses to consult with their accountants to discuss available government rebates, and set a date and time to convene an internal energy audit. Wissman indicates that his firm offers free energy audits and can facilitate such internal meetings at absolutely no cost for business, and through its NKEco Program, can develop specific green initiatives that take advantage of current available rebate and governmental programs.
