April 14, 2009 - PRLog -- May 2009 temperatures will be close to usual levels although southern California could trend cooler than usual. There could be some spotty warmth in portions of the Central Great Plains.

May 2009 precipitation will be seasonal except for some drier than typical areas from Southern California into the Great Basin then over to the Central parts Great Plains.

Seasonal temperatures for much of the nation will be a pleasant improvement for much of the Plains, Great Lakes and the Eastern Seaboard. Patchy warmth in the Plains will be welcomed and encourage some early field work. Seasonal temperatures will help the planting pace, but the cool start and lingering surface moisture will still result in a later than usual start to the planting season. Seasonal temperatures will support spring shopping sprees, but retailers anticipating a surge into summer sales could be disappointed. One season at a time in 2009.

Precipitation will continue some short term drought relief to portions of drought stressed Texas and more to the Southeast. But, seasonal rains will not break deeply into long term drought impacts once evaporative loss rates climb to summertime levels. The shallow surface moisture across the south, while positive, will result in planting delays that could ultimately impact crop selection and crop productivity. Seasonal temperatures sound positive for the south until the late planting dates are taken into consideration. Late plantings mean crop root systems are under greater than usual stress once the heat of a summer day blisters.
