Broadway Under the Stars featuring Southern Utah’s Southwest Symphony with guest artist, Richie Ramone, renown and exciting percussionist. The symphony is conducted by Maestro Gary Caldwell and includes 85 musicians from Dixie State College and Washington County in a program of audience pleasing favorites from Broadway shows. This concert is on Saturday, May 16, 8:00 p.m.at the stunning Tanner Amphitheater in Springdale, Utah. Come early and enjoy a barbeque dinner at 6:30 (symphony fund raiser.)
The evening’s program features musical selections from Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, Seventy-Six Trombones, Les Misérables, Wizard of Oz and Oklahoma. Guest Artist Richie Ramone will perform his original suite for drums and orchestra based upon Leonard Bernsteins’s music from West Side Story arranged by Richie Ramone and Ron Abel under the direction of Richie Ramone.
Discovered in the symphonic world by Maestra Rachael Worby, who calls him "The Extraordinary Richie Ramone," Ramone's unique drumming style has inspired generations of fans. A child prodigy, the classically trained Ramone began studying at age 4; by 11, he was touring professionally, playing in Drum and Bugle Corps, and winning awards at the city, state and national level. His teachers include jazz great Joe Morello, among others.
Now, Ramone's orchestral arrangement of West Side Story, featuring drums, is drawing kudos with diverse audiences -- from conservative symphonic patrons who grew up in the big-band era of Gene Krupa, Max Roach and Harry James, to the millions of rock fans that helped make The Ramones second only to The Beatles as one of the most influential groups in history. The piece (an original suite for drums & orchestra) premiered with the Pasadena Pops. It was an astounding success and drew notables like Former California Governor Pete Wilson, who came to enjoy the Sunday performance. Audiences were on their feet for rousing standing ovations and fans of all ages returned for all three nights!
