Cystoscopy and NMP22 testing provide 99% bladder cancer detection rates when combined

Inverness Medical has announced that the combination of the NMP22 BladderChek urine test with cystoscopy provides an effective method for early detection of bladder cancer, with detection rates of 99%.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr 14, 2009 -
Bedford, UK,: The combination of the NMP22®BladderChek® urine test with cystoscopy provides an effective method for early detection of bladder cancer. The point-of-care NMP22 BladderChek assay from Inverness Medical measures the Nuclear Matrix Protein NMP22 in voided urine and has been shown to increase the detection of new and recurrent bladder tumours.

Research has shown that cystoscopy and the NMP22 test provide bladder cancer detection rates of 99%(1). Studies have demonstrated that the NMP22 test is a useful adjunctive tool in the evaluation of patients with suspected bladder cancer and is able to identify several malignancies missed by initial cystoscopy, with increased combined sensitivity of 99%. It is also an ideal marker for monitoring patients with existing bladder cancers and for detecting recurrences earlier.

Clinically proven and with results available during the patient visit, clinicians can make important decisions on further testing and treatment immediately when using the NMP22 BladderChek test. The painless, non-invasive, easy to use assay provides unambiguous results, requiring no expert analysis or laboratory time.  Importantly, one of the first symptoms of bladder cancer, the presence of blood in the sample, does not interfere with the NMP22 Bladderchek results.  Requiring only four drops of urine, the NMP22 Bladderchek test is ideal for initial assessment as well as monitoring.

Due to its rapid format and ease of use, when used in conjunction with standard diagnostic procedures, the NMP22 BladderChek test can be used to facilitate the screening of at risk groups such as smokers, fire fighters, petro-chemical workers, hairdressers, painters, textile workers, road construction workers (tar) and arson investigators(2).

As with many types of cancer, the outcome of bladder cancer depends on how advanced it is when it is diagnosed. Therefore, early detection whilst the tumour is still at a superficial stage is extremely important and can be aided with the introduction of urinary marker tests in conjunction with cystoscopy(2).
