April 13, 2009 - PRLog -- (Salt Lake City, UT) – Since Americans spend at least 90% of their time indoors, the air quality in a home can negatively affect the health of a child or adult especially during cleaning.  In an effort to raise awareness on Earth Day about the health risks and environmental concerns linked to hundreds of household chemicals, Sargent Steam is inviting local residents to trade-in their cleaning chemicals for a free “Green Cleaning Kit” to learn ways to clean green.  Most cleaning products are toxic so the Salt Lake Valley Health Department will properly dispose of the collected products since they cannot be put in the garbage or down the drain because they contaminate soil, local rivers and waterways.

Recently, a January 2009 report by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine concluded that all the women in their study who were exposed to cleaning agents, including both asthmatic and non-asthmatic participants, had respiratory symptoms in response.  The Centers for Disease Control reports asthma is both a leading chronic illness and a leading cause of absenteeism for children and youth. The cleaning chemical drop-off event will take place at the Sargent Steam store located at 3131 East 3300 South, Salt Lake City on Earth Day, Wednesday April 22, 2009 9am to 7pm, Thursday, April 23 & Friday April 24 9am to 7pm or Saturday, April 25 10am to 2pm.
