It’s the 19th century and Sarah Jane Flint is born into a happy and religious family in northern England.
Sarah has a nice life—her father is gainfully employed and her mother and sister make Sarah’s entry into the world a safe and warm haven for their new blessing. The family is seemingly set for a nice future during a time when industry was booming.
Life changes for the family when Sarah’s mother dies unexpectedly when Sarah turns nine years old. Her death seems to act as a catalyst for misfortune, and over the years, Sarah’s father’s health deteriorates and her sister marries and moves far away. Sarah is left to take care of her father and their money runs out, forcing the two to be separated and live in a parish workhouse.
Sarah loses her faith in God and in life as she is subjected to an abusive supervisor, Mrs. Leach. Mrs. Leach mistreats Sarah on a regular basis and steals the only thing Sarah has left from her mother—a family locket. When her father dies of an institutional infection, Sarah’s spiral into despair and madness begins. Revenge replaces the young woman’s faith and she decides that God has abandoned her—“The Devil knocked on my door one night and I let him in.”
Over the years, Sarah seeks her revenge in unimaginable ways and a fury is unleashed that Sarah refuses to contain. Where is this God she put her faith in so many years ago and why has he abandoned her?
