According to Suzi Marsh on Atlanta's WSB - FM radio on Sunday, April 12, 2009, The Dysfunctional Father's Guide to Pregnancy, Birth and Babies by XY is "just an amazing book". Suzi described the authors as men who are "in touch with their feelings and so dedicated to being such good father's you would think that they were almost like mothers". She commented that it was like talking to Phil Donahue or Dr. Phil's father.
But some wonder whether the book is too revealing and possibly provides advice that is better left unsaid. One mom blog proclaimed that fathers don’t need advice on “How to be a bad dad". A buyer for a mainstream retailer responded to the book with this reply: "I am in receipt of your book and due to the blunt nature in which it is written, this is not a book we can carry in our stores."
But that’s what makes this interesting. Jennifer at the Dirty Shirt Blog not only recommends this as a great gift book but adds "with chapters titled cleverly like “Sex During Pregnancy (And How To Avoid It”) you kind of get the gist of the direction this book goes in, because really what man writes willingly about avoiding sex? :) This is a great book and a smooth read, if you don’t mind stopping every other page to laugh. I even had to run in to the next room at one point and say to my husband ‘This is so you!’ So if you are looking for a great book to read this is one!"
One of her readers agreed and posted "At last! A book that takes all the seriousness out of pregnancy and birth and one you won’t have to force your partner to read! Excellent stuff."
The mommy reviewed blog stated "the author(s) have a tongue-in-cheek way of writing that manages to find humor in even the direst of situations (or so thinks my female/Mommy/
Sue Vogan on bookpleasures.com said "from Childbirth Classes – The Humiliation Continues to Junior’s First Birthday Party – A Dysfunctional End To A Dysfunctional Year, you will find crude humor and real insight to a man’s mind regarding family planning."
One of the most detailed reviews can be found on epinions.com, which reported that "a pretty fun book about the (anti) joys of fatherhood and what you, the dysfunctional dad, can do to make the experience a little more tolerable. It is a little offensive, but the humor doesn't cross the line and most will find it at least a fairly pleasant diversion from the seriousness of everyday life and everyday parenthood."
Decide for yourself. The book is available for purchase on Amazon.com and through other major retailers.
