Many people have heard about the growing problem of antibiotic resistant bacteria. These simple but highly adaptable life forms are finding ways to survive despite — and often because of — our best efforts to kill them off.
Due to the indiscriminate overuse of deworming products, equine parasites are developing a similar resistance to the products used to control them. We’ve altered our horses’ environment to the point where parasite exposure has exceeded our horses’ ability to sustain balance.
The authors do not recommend discontinuing regular deworming programs. Instead, they suggest a new approach, incorporating a three-step program that includes testing for parasite load, tailoring your deworming program and reducing the parasite stress on your horse.
The authors have developed a method of biologically balanced horse care based on an understanding of the emotional, physical, nutritional and environmental needs of living things. By using these techniques, horse owners will be able to control flies, parasites and pathogens; reduce their reliance on chemical dewormers, antibiotics and toxic fly sprays; and restore or maintain their horse’s health and well-being.
