UPSonNet: UPS Industry Helps Out Crisis Offering More Efficient More Manageable Affordable solutions

Review of UPS manufacturers’ activities shows unprecedented effort to launch new products, that improve performance and decrease operating costs, and to offer solutions which enable users to invest in such performance improving plans.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr 14, 2009 -
UPS industry, crucial to protecting computers from utility disturbances, is expected to drop by 5 percent in 2009, but fully recover to double digit growth in 2011. Manufacturers are now sowing the seeds to make this forecast come true.

UPSonNet launched at the dawn of 2009, UPS-News service which provides most important news from UPS industry participants. The service presents major events, operations, product enunciations. It enables to track industry member activities, to evaluate market directions and industry trends.

Reviewing latest recorded news manifests that Power Conversion Industry is an active member of a community that joins hands to respond to the challenge of fighting the economic crisis, and helping users to increase performance and reduce operating costs.
Main effort, as revealed from the records is devoted to three following topics:

•   Launching improved products, aimed to increase efficiency and decrease power losses in data centers and other large installations.

•   Presenting new technological solutions which enable monitoring, controlling and managing consumption in order to decrease wasted power.

•   Offering new financial solutions, to overcome credit shortage and enable investment in physical infrastructure which improves performance and reduces operating costs.

Some examples, from March 2009 UPSonNet –News demonstrate offered solutions.

UPS manufacturers conservatively specify only full load efficiency; normally reaching for high power three phase UPS systems 90% to 94%. Practically however, most applications and particularly data centers utilize only 25% or 50% of UPS output power. At these power levels the efficiency drops by 5% to 7%.

Latest UPS designs are more efficient and more attentive to practical applications, by designing equipment with high efficiency at low load. Thus, APC (American Power Conversion) a major Power UPS manufacturer announces in March 2009 a 84MVA UPS installation with 97% efficiency at full load and 94% at 25% load. While, General Electric announces a 750KVA double conversion UPS, extendible to 7.5 Megawatt with 96% at full load and 94% efficiency at 50% load.

To get optimum results control of power costs and service continuity should be implemented. Main UPS manufacturers, APC and Eaton Powerware  both suggest essential solutions. APC presents an open InfraStructure Center Application, which will be available at Q2 2009,  that enables tracking the Energy cost of devices from different manufacturers.
Similarly, Eaton announced in March availability of its Advanced Monitored ePDU technology, which enables to monitor, track and manage power consumption at the receptacle level for all equipment in the data center.

To help companies to solve the problem of lack of available credit, APC and IBM Global Financing, offer jointly a leasing program, to promote companies, which want in the current difficult economic situation, to invest in physical infrastructure of data centers to improve performance and reduce operating costs.

It becomes clear that we are moving to an interactive world, where UPS Manufacturers attentive to user needs offer not only better equipment, more suited to users’ environment, but also the managing platforms to decrease running costs and the financial tools needed to overcome credit shortage needed to enable implementation of the new technologies.
