During 1984, Mr Berney was searching for a way to increase the return on his capital. In January of that year, the London Stock Exchange had launched the Financial Times Stock Exchange FTSE 100 Share Index, usually called "the Footsie". The Footsie Index is a number reflecting the share price of the U.K.'s top 100 companies on the London Stock Exchange. In May 1984, the Exchange opened a market in Options on the Footsie.
