A veteran indie musician of nearly a decade, D-O-E has perfected the craft of making statements. With past release titles such as You Were Probably an Accident and Somewhere Between a Retard and a God, he has the unforgiving tendency to be brutally honest in his poetry. In response to recent public claims that hip hop is dead and the economy is failing, D-O-E is prepared to take on the world with his upcoming album, Be Middle Class or Die Trying.
The first single, “Everyone is a Hustler Now,” was released Friday, April 10, 2009, on Sykophunk Weekly; the song will be available for free MP3 download for one week. In this track, D-O-E addresses the unfortunate state of our economy and its effects on the different social classes of the American people. His sense of sarcasm and unsympathetic stabs at the corporate world of capitalism provide a balanced blend of good laughs and good points. Also not spared any ridicule are mainstream rap/hip hop artists whose bling is not quite as valuable as it used to be.
D-O-E classifies his music as sykophunk, a hybrid genre he himself has described as “underground hip hop influenced by metal, gothic, and electronica, bitch-slapped with humor and sarcasm, and then power-bombed into an ocean of social and spiritual consciousness.”
Sykophunk Productions, D-O-E’s indie label, has also launched a campaign called the Hustle-Distro, a method of distribution that allows the fans to sell albums and keep the profit for themselves. This is not only a creative way to get the music out to more listeners, but it is also a legitimate means of earning a little pocket money for the people that sign up. Indeed, it may even give more credibility to the idea that “Everyone is a Hustler Now.”
