New Managers Learn Management Skills on The Manager's Journey

Learning basic management skills on the job is a major challenge for new managers. The challenge has been met head-on by professional speaker and coach Helen Wilkie with her 12-month self-study program, "The Manager's Journey".

Traditionally, any training new managers might have received — and many receive none at all — is usually concentrated in a few days right at the start of their new assignment. Since they don't yet have any practical experience of managing, they can't visualize or imagine how to apply what they learned — and much of it doesn't stick.

To make matters worse, they are usually too busy dealing with the daily challenges of the business itself, and can't find time to work on their management skills.

Enter Helen Wilkie and "The Manager's Journey". This non-traditional program is delivered in monthly "stages", each of which focuses on one specific management skilllset including, for example:

Emotional Intelligence Skills for Managers
The Dynamic Duo: Delegation and Empowerment

Studying one subject area through audio and written lessons spread throughout each month allows "Travelers", as Wilkie calls her students, not only to absorb the materials but to apply them in the real world of their jobs.

"They can fit the lessons into their lives in the way that suits them best," says Wilkie. "So learning doesn't have to interfere with work. The two become complementary."

The program is named for Wilkie's belief that while being appointed a manager is an event, becoming a manager is a journey.
