April 9, 2009 - PRLog -- The provision of health, safety and welfare in your workplace is an essential, whether you are an employee or the employer. The Government’s stringent guidelines are obviously in place to protect people from slips, trips, falls and other hazards at work – but they are also of great advantage to companies and businesses.  As long as you, the employer, meet the duty of care guidelines, as set out by the Health and Safety Executive, it really is then a case of covering your back.

But Total Protection UK, a specialist in the provision of safety equipment and services, want to draw your attention to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The term refers to all types of equipment used or worn in the work place, including protective clothing and safety equipment, protecting those working in that environment from one or more risks to their health, safety and welfare.

Mark Haylett from Total Protection UK, which supplies gas detection equipment, breathing apparatus, and height safety equipment, said: “It is absolutely essential that employers and businesses take these regulations very seriously. At the end of the day, it is up to them to ensure that their workers are able to do their jobs in a safe working environment. We are able to provide advice and guidance to ensure that businesses and companies are investing in the right kind of PPE and safety equipment.”

According to the Health and Safety Executive, the PPE at Work Regulations 1992 states that the employer must provide this equipment (they cannot ask for money from an employee for PPE, whether it is returnable or not). Additionally, these regulations also require that people are trained on how to use the PPE properly and that the PPE must be used, worn and stored correctly – but prior to any use, the equipment must be tested.

Take, for example, Total Protection UK’s range of breathing apparatus, all of which meet European standards required of safety equipment. Disposable, half and full masks, in addition to filters, escape masks, powered air purifying respirators and fresh-air breathing apparatus are essential examples of PPE in certain professions.

Mr. Haylett added, “The type of safety equipment we stock is exactly the kind of PPE most workers require and I cannot stress enough how important it is for companies who are unsure about the PPE they need to come forward.”
