EGYPTOLOGY SUMMER SCHOOL 2009
Trade, Travel and Transport in Ancient Egypt
Monday 22nd June to Friday 26th June 2009
10.00 am-5.00 pm
Birkbeck College, Malet Street
This five day summer school will present a series of lectures on trade, travel and transport in ancient Egypt followed by a special day devoted to new research. Topics covered will include: where the Egyptians went and why, who went and how did they get there.
Voyages both real and literary will be looked at in detail, exotic locations and their products described, as well as the hazards involved in going anywhere whatsoever. Ancient Egyptian travellers ranging from explorers and envoys to Amarna Period postmen will be met courtesy of original sources and archaeological evidence.
Boats, donkeys, chariots and horses will be described and journeys, whether across dangerous seas, hostile territory or from one village to the next, will be examined through the Egyptians’ own words. The summer school will also include the unique opportunity to enjoy a full day dedicated to presentations by junior UK scholars on their current research. Tea and coffee will be provided.
The cost of the programme is £200.00 for the week.
The full programme will be made available 2 – 3 weeks before the course.
