Malta - Professor Simon Attard Montalto, chairman of the Department of Paediatrics, explained, “Breast milk is especially important for premature and sick newborns and we strive hard to ensure that breast milk from mothers of pre-term and newborn babies is stored and not wasted. It is the local practice to use stored breast milk from the mother to her own baby. Indeed, this freezer will not be used as a ‘milk bank’ to feed other infants, as may be the case in other countries.”
Pemix Ltd. distributes several medical products on behalf of many international brands, and has had and continues to have a strong, longstanding relationship with various hospitals and health care organizations throughout Malta. During informal discussions between Mater Dei Hospital personnel and Maria Gatt on behalf of Pemix Ltd, it became clear that the NPICU would benefit from a freezer to ensure valuable breast milk that, although consumed in small quantities by babies born prematurely, is essential for their well being and should not be wasted. This initiative is in line with the company’s ongoing programme of supporting the health service that includes donations of much needed equipment.
