In the 1800s, hundreds of laborers worked to build the Oodadatta rail line that connects the southern ports to the central inland of red desert and vast arid cattle country.
Ewan and Anne Evans are a young couple that relocate from Wales to Australia to build a life for themselves. Ewan begins working on the rail line and soon the couple welcome their first child, a baby girl, into their lives. But Ewan and Anne are not destined for a happy ending—Ewan is killed while working on the line. Anne, devastated and alone, takes her baby and wanders out into the sweltering, red desert in search of Ewan. In her grief, she believes that he is just over the horizon. Their bodies are never found.
In 2002, a group of paleontologists travel to central Australia on an expedition. Ellen Talbot, an Oxford professor and her colleague, Kate Kohlberg unearth two bodies—a mother and child. But both of these women unearth far more than just fossils and bones during their stay in Australia. They encounter old loves and face painful pasts.
What do these strong women learn about themselves as they learn more about another woman’s love, pain and loss from a century ago?
In the tradition of the Thorn Birds, Gambold creates rich, unforgettable characters using vivid, descriptive prose and sharp dialogue. The men and women contained in her pages spring to life under her skillful direction.
