April 7, 2009 - PRLog -- A recent study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine finds that poor treatment compliance by commercial drivers with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) supports the call for federally mandated testing of drivers who are likely to suffer from the disorder.

Sleep apnea is a serious illness most often characterized by snoring, gasping for breath and excessive daytime sleepiness.  It is implicated in many disorders including high blood pressure, changes in insulin resistance and a six fold increase in heart attacks and strokes.

Sleep Medicine Expert and www.IHateCPAP.com founder Dr. Ira Shapira agrees that mandating Obstructive Sleep Apnea screenings could reduce the risk of truck crashes.  He notes that truck drivers with undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorders put everyone around them at increased risk when they get behind the wheel.

The study's lead author, Philip Parks, told ScienceDaily, "In our study, the majority of truck drivers did not follow through on physician recommendations for sleep studies and sleep apnea treatment," adding, "As a result, it is possible that many of the 14 million truck drivers on American road have undiagnosed or untreated sleep apnea."

Also in recent news, a Cambridge Health Alliance study has confirmed previous findings that obesity-driven testing strategies identify commercial truck drivers with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and suggests that mandating OSA screenings could reduce the risk of truck crashes. According to the Cambridge Health Alliance approximately 2.4 - 3.9 million licensed commercial drivers in the U.S. are expected to have OSA.
