Created by MyKidsPlate.com, the Hairy Penny Drive is the first multi-city event to collect pennies and ponytails for the Locks of Love charitable organization.
The Hairy Penny Drive will begin its penny collection drive on April 13 and run until May 13, 2009. Ponytail donations will be collected at select salons in Central Florida, and other cities as they sign up to participate. Any business can be a penny donation location by notifying MyKidsPlate.com and putting out a penny donation jar.
“I have a sister whom as a child, lost her hair to cancer,” said Julie Casey, owner of MyKidsPlate.com. “Watching her go through the emotional side of such an impact at that age, I always knew I wanted to do something. Locks of Love wasn’t around then and now that I am both a parent and a business owner, it was the right time to do something. ”
After a meeting with an event management intern from the Rosen School of Hospitality and permission from Locks of Love, the Hairy Penny Drive was born. Recognizing that not everyone has a ten inch ponytail to donate, the penny donation part of the event was created to include everyone.
“We were excited to learn about the Hairy Penny Drive event to benefit Locks of Love, which will further our efforts to help children living with medical hair loss,” said Lauren Kukkamaa, Communications Director for Locks of Love. “Continuing awareness of Locks of Love’s efforts will assist us in reaching more and more families and improving the day to day lives of these children. Locks of Love is grateful for volunteers like Julie Casey and MyKidsPlate.com who help to make our mission possible.”
The kick-off party for the Hairy Penny Drive will be hosted by the Cork & Olive in Lake Mary, FL on Monday, April 13th. Collector’s bottles of wine and olive oil specially made for The Hairy Penny Drive will be sold with 25% of the proceeds going to the event. There will also be a “Closest to the Pin” and “Hole-in-One”
