Navimatics Corporation released the latest version of “Charts&Tides”
, its leading marine navigation software product for the iPhone and iPod touch. The product combines marine charts and navigation together with tides and currents and is intended to be used as a mission planning tool and/or backup device.
“Charts&Tides”
incorporates chart data and tide harmonics derived from official NOAA data. The chart data is presented to the user as a continuous and seamless vector chart; this chart can be moved, zoomed or rotated and information about features on the chart can be viewed using simple finger gestures. “Charts&Tides”
is also able to compute tides and currents for a number of locations in real time. The complete chart and tide data is included with the software and there is no 3G or Wi-Fi connection required in order for the software to work.
The product uses the device’s built-in GPS (only available in the iPhone 3G) to provide location, speed and track information. The product supports Direct-to navigation through the use of a “Horizontal Situation Indicator” instrument; this instrument allows for the graphical display of the vessel’s Desired Track (DTK) and Cross-Track Error (XTE) and allows to easily stay on the intended course.
“Charts&Tides”
divides the US coastline (including the Great Lakes) into 9 regions that are available for download through the iTunes AppStore. Each region retails for $34.99.
