A common criticism of security bollards is that they look more practical than aesthetic. The analogy is that buildings wanting anti terror protection end up looking like a prison. Leda report that they are looking at two options to better meet architectural requirements on secured locations.
Both options are built on the PAS68 UK standard. In 2008 Leda successfully tested to the PAS68 standard which involved vehicle impact tests in addition to cutting and blast tests. The inner core bollard needs to be rated to this important standard so that any other finish features are built on this premise. The company hope to further test bollard barrier mixes this year without an external sleeve. The implication is that a range of shapes may then become possible for concrete casting such as street furniture.
A second option available today is to use lightweight plastic with a concrete or stone external finish. These bollards have the internal PAS68 security bollard within the plastic exterior. The plastic can be made in any shape and then any finish applied. “You cannot tell the difference from a normal concrete bollard by looking at it,” reports Jeff Clark, designer of the product at Leda. The company have already proposed the bollard as an alternative to concrete on a few jobs. Mr Clark adds that the plastic bollard is less expensive, has a much faster supply time, is faster and easier to install, is cheaper to freight and easier to touch up.
