Martin has been away from his South African home in Tembisa for seven years.

Studying mysticism in Vienna, Martin’s mentor tells him it’s time he returns home.  Martin is reluctant, but decides to take his advice and returns, only to find the country, his parents, and the political climate drastically changed.

It is a post-Apartheid South Africa—ripe with turmoil, violence, segregation and hatred.  Martin’s opinion of his fellow man is low, to say the least, but he has a strong empathy to his homeland and their people.

Martin finds his parents changed by the movement—both emotionally and financially.  They have taken in two tenant families in order to make ends meet, but the new occupants create a precarious and volatile mix, creating a disturbing role as mediator for Martin.  Martin must use his learned wisdom and spirituality to keep the peace between his parents, their tenants, and the workers of his parents’ estate.

Will Martin be able to adapt to this new environment?  Can he gain strength from his spirituality or will he find himself drawn into the racial disputes that plague South Africa?  What lessons will he learn about himself and will he truly ever be able to return home?

O’Doherty’s novel, full of complex and rich characters and stunning descriptive narrative about the beauty and pride of a people and country steeped in deeply-held spiritual and familial tradition, is spellbinding.
