JP Turner -- On March 24, the Alzheimer’s Association released a new report entitled, “2009 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures.” As the baby boomer generation continues to age the increase in dementia or Alzheimer’s disease will be dramatic. The report states that new cases will present at a million per year by mid-century. Many who have already experienced the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s on friends and family members know all too well the daily challenges that must be faced. This debilitating disease can often change family dynamics for many years.
Today almost 10 million Americans provide unpaid care to loved ones who are stricken with Alzheimer’s or dementia. It is when the caregiver can no longer handle the day-to-day activities that they make the decision to place their loved one into a facility where they can receive around the clock care. I have personal experience dealing with this situation and know how heartbreaking the decision to move a loved one into a long-term care facility can be. The stress, both physical and emotional for the caregiver, can result in increased health issues. Loved ones without long term care insurance are forced to rely on friends and family for care or utilize family savings and retirement plans to pay for the cost professional care -- adding significantly to the emotional stress being experienced by their caregivers.
Long-term care insurance allows loved ones to continue their lives with as much normalcy as possible. Having your family member cared for at home by trained caregivers gives a much needed respite to all. Knowing that savings and retirement plans can remain earmarked for their intended use and are not being used to pay for home/facility care is priceless.
