Georeferencing award for 2009 is the most awaiting award by the GIS community. The Georeferencing award for 2009 will be presented by actor Brad Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie. And “the award for this year 2009 for Georeferencing goes to ...”
I always dream to hear these words. We have awards for best actor, best actress, best work, but why not an award for the area we work in. I think there should also be an award for the best Georeferencing service.
GIS – Geographical information System is a branch of science which enables us to study the behavior of each element in the universe. When we study the earth it is done through photographs captured by an aerial view called aerial photography or through satellite photography. GIS enables us to predict what will occur and what has occurred. While studying it we use various techniques to interpret the photographs. As photographs are not recognized by the system as an input for its operations the first task will be to convert it into a computer understandable format.
Normally all the photographs taken may be in tiff, jpeg, or raw image format these need to be converted to computer understandable format. The process of Georeferencing helps convert them to the desired computer understandable format. Georeferencing involves marking control points at each accessible object on a photograph that needs to be referenced on the surface of earth.
In general you can say plot control points over a map or a photograph of an earth surface using Georeferencing and drag it over to the globe of the earth; it will stick exactly to the geo coordinates which have been plotted on them.
It is a tedious work and requires precision while plotting for better results. So there should be an award for the best Georeferencing service. The name of the award can be “Georeferencing award for 2009”.
With a dream as others that I normally dream daily, I am waiting for it to be real.
