Power plants must have a fuel source that turns the turbines that create electricity. The fuel sources used are nuclear, coal, or natural gas. Hydroelectric power plants are driven by water moving the electrical turbines in dams.
Problems abound with current coal fired power plants, a fact that was demonstrated by the recent coal sludge mishap in Tennessee. Coal power plants heat up steam that turns the turbines, but current plants only operate at about 50% efficiency. Cogeneration plants in contrast use the steam to heat the plant, raising effectiveness to 70%. These new plants can also be powered on natural gas, a cleaner burning alternative to coal.
