PRLog (Press Release) - Apr 01, 2009 -
Daybreak Cohousing in Portland, just one of a number of cohousing projects designed to localize and let residents live in community and a bit lighter on our planet, will hold an open house and tour on Saturday, June 6th from 1-4pm. Daybreak will be a dense, urban community with 30 self-contained units. Located in the Overlook neighborhood of North Portland, Daybreak includes lots of common use areas and added benefits that enhance a green lifestyle.

The site is a two-thirds-acre on North Killingsworth Avenue within three miles of downtown, on a bus line with frequent service and a short walk from the Interstate MAX light rail line—features which invite walking, cycling and co-mingling with neighbors. Grace Kim, one of the principal architects with Schemata Workshop, designed Daybreak. Kim was awarded a national Young Architects Award by the American Institute of Architects in 2008. Construction began in August 2008 and will be complete in Fall 2009.

Cohousing projects are known for reducing the carbon footprint of housing in at least three key ways—green and re-used building materials; shared community features that allow individual homes to be smaller, and lastly; community living, which results in less car travel and localized lifestyles. B & G Builders was recognized by the Build Local Alliance for its use of Forest Stewardship Council certified lumber at Daybreak Cohousing, a good example of cohousing going green from the ground up.

Smaller houses, shared spaces and environmentally sound building practices result in an improved quality of life and reduced cost of living. Come tour Daybreak Cohousing, meet community members and learn why cohousing may just be the type of housing change America can truly invest in, (see details below).
