About Murder by Family: December 10, 2003: Bart Whitaker masterminded the murder of his mother Tricia, brother Kevin, and attempted murder of his father Kent. He was also shot. Did he do it out of hatred for his parents, did he do it for the money or was he just an unhappy, misunderstood kid who felt like he couldn’t live up to the expectations of others?
There were other plots and attempts on the Whitaker family starting in Bart’s second year of college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. All unsuccessful. From all appearances he was a well-adjusted, outgoing, fun-loving, fashion-conscious kid with a great life who loved his parents. On the inside Bart struggled with intense self-loathing, insecurity and feelings of hopelessness. There were no outward signs that his friends, family or even fiancé could see of the pain and turmoil he was experiencing. Until it was too late. No one could believe that Bart was capable of such a devious murder plot against the family who loved him.
Kent Whitaker, Bart’s father believed in his innocence, loved him unconditionally and did the unimaginable. He forgave him. This is a true story of a dad who slowly came to recognize the truth of his son’s guilt yet refused to abandon him, even in the face of horrible testimony. This is a tragic story of a father’s dawning realization that his son had secretly moved into darkness, scheming to take his life and how prayer, forgiveness and faith brought their winding roads back together and into the light. Bart Whitaker is on Death Row for the murder of his mother and brother. His father, Kent, has truly forgiven the unforgivable.
About the author: Kent Whitaker has since retired, is newly married; focusing his energy into his emotional healing, restoring the relationship with his son and dealing with the painful scars from that fateful night back in 2003 when his life changed forever.
