LITCHFIELD – Litchfield Bancorp is proud to announce that Jimmy Lamanna, a student at Torrington East School is the winner of the Art of Discovery T-shirt contest. The contest is part of the Litchfield Bancorp’s arts-in-education funding program, which is being held at Torringford and East Schools during March and April. Jimmy Lamanna’s winning design will be printed on a t-shirt given to all 4th grade students at the end of the residency. The two runners-up, Lexi Rayno from Torringford School and Joseph Gainley from East School will also receive a prize for their creative designs.
The Art of Discovery is a multi-cultural arts program, which was created in 2004 by Litchfield Bancorp and provides area schools with funding for artist-in-residence programs. Working with teaching artists, children have the opportunity to discover their own hidden talents, interests and skills, and learn tools to help them continue The Art of Discovery long after the school year has ended.
This year’s Art of Discovery program kicked off on March 19th with an assembly featuring singer-songwriter Les Julian. 4th grade students from both East and Torringford Elementary Schools sang and played along to the musical stories. Heads bobbed and feet tapped as Mr. Julian introduced youngsters to the project’s theme, the art of story telling and world cultures, using song and humor as well as mandolin and percussion instruments.
The program will continue with artist and puppeteer Larry Engler. Mr. Engler, of Poko Puppets, has presented workshops in puppetry for over thirty years for schools all over the country. Through a series of workshops he will guide students to discover their creative talents while incorporating story telling, world culture and puppetry skills.
