March 30, 2009 - PRLog -- The army today made the world’s first military zero carbon investment in renewable energy.  Barracks will now be heated and powered by cutting edge highly efficient technology which turns trees into green power.

By growing and harvesting trees on Army land, the Army hopes to cut their fuel bills and the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.

Using ground breaking technology developed by Schmitt Enertec, who used to repair engines for army trucks, trees can be converted into both heat and power in the new Enercarb plant.   One tree can power more than 400 homes for a day.

The Army hopes to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, including oil and gas, and at the same time use locally sourced wood.

“We have been working for 8 years on this technology and are proud that the Army and Johnson Controls have selected us to help turn the world greener.  The military zero carbon heat and power solution is a world first,” says Frank Schmitt of Schmitt Enertec GmbH.

Schmitt Enertec is mass producing the Enercarb plant throughout 2009 which will provide distributed heat and power generation using local biomass resources.  The Enercarb programme is expected to create a minimum of 3000 jobs.

In the UK, Schmitt Enertec’s  plant is distributed by Alfagy Ltd, a renewable energy company based in the South West.

NOTES

The Enercarb Technology
The Enercarb heat and power plant uses the latest technology to convert raw wood chips into heat and power.  The plant is the only fully automatic and tar-fee wood gasification plant on the world market.  As well as electricity, the plant produces hot water which is piped into the heating system and tanks for heating and bath water.
