Focusing on user-submitted explanations for confusing terms used in rap songs that can be voted on, Understand Rap's general purpose is to help people understand rap music. In addition to term explanations, anyone can add an artist, album, album review, song, song interpretation, term, question, answer, or event. The events can be seen on a clickable, draggable timeline, and there is a map of artist locations as well as a tags section (a glossary of key words used in terms). Terms can be accessed through the Newest and Needed pages, or by browsing by artist or category.
The site was recently written about on usatoday.com's Pop Candy blog, was linked to on collegehumor.com, mentioned in the Loyola University newspaper, discussed on a Toronto-area rock radio station, was featured on thrillist.com, and was part of a video blog by reporters from TV channel 4 in Pittsburgh.
The purpose of the site is to help bridge generational and cultural gaps that are preventing people from appreciating rap music, or are causing them to dislike it for no reason. The audience for this web site is extremely broad, as there is a wide demographic that does not understand rap music.
