“Pre-college summer programs offer many advantages for students planning to attend college to major in art or design,” stated Patricia Boman, managing partner of Art & Design Educational Advisors, LLC. “Attending one can be a valuable investment for a high school student preparing for college.”
Students who enroll in a pre-college art and design program have the opportunity to take courses in a college environment with college faculty. The students strengthen their existing skills, learn additional ones and create new work for their college admission portfolio. They experience living in college housing, making friends, navigating a college campus, etc. all as part of a supervised experience.
“It can be very beneficial for students to have this college-like experience in advance of actually attending college,” added Boman. “Students typically come away from it with stronger work and a clearer idea of what college will be like.”
“The list of programs we have compiled includes only those programs with residential facilities to accommodate students who live outside the area,” Boman said. She encourages students who find the cost of a residential program to be too high to explore programs in their own communities. “Students may find a pre-college art & design program available at a local college making it possible for them to live at home.”
