Fallon Ambulance Service takes over as the Partners HealthCare provider of Critical Care Ground Ambulance, Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support and Chair Coach for Partners HealthCare effective March 1, 2009. Peter Racicot, Senior Vice President at Fallon Ambulance, said that this new contract represents 35,000 ambulance/chair car runs annually, which is a boost of 30% in the 86-year old firm’s overall discretionary ambulance business.
Fallon Ambulance will collaborate with three other providers, all of whom serve as subcontractors to Fallon Ambulance. They include Cataldo Ambulance of Somerville, Ma; Boston Medflight, based out of Hanscom Airforce Base and Spaulding Rehabilitation Ambulance of Boston. Fallon Ambulance Service will be responsible for the performance of the subcontractors and will handle all calls through the Fallon Ambulance Service Dispatch Center.
Fallon was awarded the contract on January 30 of this year; American Medical Response had held the contract since 1997.
As a result of the new business, Fallon Ambulance has added 120 new EMTs and Paramedics, increasing the firm’s employee count to over 700. The company has also added 20 additional ambulances and four Wheel Chair Vans. The other three providers who will subcontract with Fallon have added personnel and vehicles as well.
Racicot said that his firm had bid unsuccessfully for the Partners contract in 2004. In planning to bid again when the contract came up for renewal, he said that the company put together a plan that would collaborate with other providers. “We have high regard for the three other providers who will work with us and look forward to providing Partners with unparalleled excellence.”
Racicot said that this contract is the single largest in the firm’s 86-year history. “This is a significant win for us,” he said, adding, “It is gratifying to have this vote of confidence from such a nationally recognized organization as Partners HealthCare, and the immediate ripple effect in the market is that we are adding more than 100 new jobs, increasing the size of our fleet, and this positions us for expansion into the Metro West market.”
