Commonwealth Games of 2010 Hosted by Delhi Reinvigorates Tourism in India

Back with a bang is the Tourism Industry of India with the upcoming Commonwealth Games of 2010 which are scheduled in Delhi in October 2010. The participants and audience coming to India have opportunity of visiting mesmerizing Indian destinations.

Common Wealth Games are organised by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), a union of around 70 countries lying in the major continents: Asia, Africa, America, Europe, Carribean and Oceania. The 19th Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be organized in Delhi in India which has become Nations' Pride. The games are scheduled between 3rd to 14th October 2010 in Delhi.

Conducting Commonwealth Games in Delhi is one of the major steps taken by the Federation as this will be the largest multi-sport event to be organized in India. This is for the first time that the Commonwealth Games will be held in India, the third developing country. The logo of the 19th Commonwealth games is inspired by Chakra, symbol of freedom and unity.

A new state-of-the-art Games Village is being built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) with a focus on maximizing athlete comfort. Locally called as “Khel Gaon”, this village is developed along the east bank of the River Yamuna. The site is off the National Highway 24 adjacent to the Akshardham temple at the Noida intersection.  

Within immediate vicinity of Games Village exist internationally known monuments and landmarks like the Bahai Temple populary called Lotus Temple, Humayun’s Tomb, Akshardham Temple.  Surrounded with a dense green natural cover, the Village will provide a relaxing and soothing environment for the athletes and officials.

OA General Secretary Randhir Singh reportedly said IPL's security issue arose because its dates that clashed with the Lok Sabha elections in the country but there is nothing scheduled during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He added the IOA has in place "the highest-level of security plans". So the players, the athletes, the audience and the tourist can be assured of the security measures.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry of India has received tremendous impulse from the Commonwealth Games of Delhi. As Jaipur and Agra are very close to Delhi and completes a tour circuit of Golden Triangle covering historical monuments of Delhi, the spectacular forts and palaces of Jaipur and the top among the New Seven Wonders of the World – our very own Taj Mahal of Agra, millions of tourist are reportedly expected to these cities also.

Going by the official estimates of Commonwealth Games, two million foreign tourists and 3.5 million domestic tourists are likely to arrive in Delhi in 2010 as a result of these Games. Government has taken taking initiatives by providing tax incentives for hotel rooms to be constructed in India, with a focus on tourist regions of Agra and Jaipur. In addition to it, the Government of India has also extended a five-year tax rebate to the tourism industry to promote growth.

The traditional Game Services are also offered to the athletes free accommodation for all athletes, a modern, comfortable Games Village, cutting-edge health facilities, security, a pollution-free environment, entertainment for non-competition times, transportation, and other, unique amenities as well. Delhi will also be offering all athletes a free trip to the famed Taj Mahal and will provide a reserved lane for participants on selected highways.

To prepare the locales for English speaking guests the Delhi government is implementing a program to teach English to low-income individuals who will have a high-frequency of contact with tourists. In addition to Delhi, the Indian Government plans to expand the program to teach people in local tourist destinations, including Agra and Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, Bhopal and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar and Puri in Orissa.
