With more internists and specialists recognizing the need and the importance of oral health, medical and dental providers are working together. You, the patient, benefits from this.
How do you benefit? With a referral from a medical provider indicating the diagnostic codes, many dental procedures may be covered by your medical insurance carrier. It is not limited to just accidents or injuries. If you have a chronic condition, cancer, a condition that compromises your oral health, or side effects from drugs that compromise your oral health, you may qualify for coverage under medical plan. Just a couple of the procedures that may be covered are dental implants, sleep apnea appliances and scans for related procedures.
How can oral hygiene contribute to systemic diseases? Over the past several years more and more information has been made available to the public about systemic diseases such as heart disease, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes and low birth weight if oral health is not properly maintained. Plaque build-up and Periodontitis (inflammation and destruction of the attachment of the teeth) can cause major oral infections that may affect the body’s susceptibility and increase the risk of other infections and diseases. Without regular check ups with your dentist and hygienists and properly maintaining your oral health, you could be doing yourself a disservice.
