It's become a pretty well known fact that on the campaign trail, now-President Obama carried lucky charms and talismans with him, including those that were pressed upon him by well wishers as he was on the campaign trail. The question is, did these help him win the presidency? And further, might they be helping him now as he works his way through the first difficult and transformational months of his presidency?
Of course, there are those who pooh-pooh this idea, but when you think about it, who's to say they actually DIDN'T help him win, or that they're not helping him now? Let's take a look at what these good luck charms may represent, even for the skeptics among us. And then, let's take a look at them and what they represent in the event they truly have real power.
Good luck charms represent "well wishes" and "positive energy"
First of all, those who wished him well on the campaign trail gave many of these good luck charms to him. Even if he didn't necessarily believe in those good luck charms' power himself, they must certainly have represented something in terms of the well wishes given to him by those who pressed these amulets and charms into his hands.
He also carried lucky charms that certainly did have absolute personal meaning, such as a bracelet that belong to a soldier who was deployed in Iraq, as well as others that represented certain belief systems, such as a tiny "Madonna and Child," a "monkey god" that purportedly represents the Hindu god Hanuman, and a gambler's "lucky chit." All of these charms represent at the very least goodwill by those who gave them to Obama, which in turn could represent truly positive energy for him and a positive mindset. And, these could indeed have helped him win simply because of that.
Further, if these charms do have true positive meaning to Obama himself based upon his own personal value system, then they do indeed help support, again, positive energy and "good luck" as he lives his life. Think about that for a second; most of us think nothing of a devout Roman Catholic who uses rosary beads, or a Christian who wears a cross around his or her neck as a means of comfort and peace. And in effect, these, too, resent "good luck charms," because they do provide this positive energy to those who believe in them.
Good luck charms for everyone?
If we take this further, then, why can't good luck charms be for everyone? Depending on your own personal value system and beliefs, you, too, can find a "good luck charm" that can truly give you peace and bring good luck in your life. Whether you're skeptical of "good luck" or not, you can certainly see that having a talisman that makes you feel more positive and protected can indeed bring you good luck simply because you have suddenly changed from feeling vulnerable and unprotected to feeling powerful and positive. And that, in turn, may bring you good luck.
