World Zombie Day is back - and the zombies are still hungry!

Award winning global charity event returns for its second year

March 25, 2009 - PRLog -- World Zombie Day, which made its wildly successful debut in 2008, returns to infect cities worldwide on October 11, 2009.

Last year, 46 cities in North America, Europe and Australia joined forces to fight global hunger through World Zombie Day, a day of fun and charity featuring zombie walks and food drives.  More than 6,500 people participated worldwide, gathering more than two tons of food donations while dressed as zombies.  Many cities also held parties, festivals and even concerts to celebrate World Zombie Day.

Mark Menold, founder of World Zombie Day, was extremely pleased with the results and is setting out to make the 2009 event bigger and better.  “Reaction to WZD was more than I ever imagined” says Menold, who is also creator, producer and host of the Pittsburgh weekly television program The It’s Alive Show.

World Zombie Day was featured in a segment of the Discovery Channel program Wreckreation Nation which aired in February.  “The Discovery show really piqued people’s interest about WZD.  Since that show first aired, I get emails daily from people wanting to know when the next WZD will be, and Monroeville Mall has been flooded with phone calls”, notes Menold.

The event has been honored with a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Fan Event of 2008.  Winners were announced by the Classic Horror Film Board earlier this week.  The awards ceremony takes place at the Wonderfest convention in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 16.

The hub of World Zombie Day will once again be a walk at the Monroeville Mall with a food drive benefiting the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.  The Mall walk is at the site where the George Romero zombie movie Dawn of the Dead was filmed.  The 2008 Monroeville walk was led by actor Ken Foree, one of the lead zombie fighters in the original Dawn.

The Monroeville walk set its third consecutive Guinness World Record (verification pending) in 2008 with 1,341 participants.  Menold expects once again to top the record this year based on the overwhelming feedback he’s received.

Besides the fun part of dressing up like a zombie, participants in all cities are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation to benefit their local hunger relief agency.
