FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Mar 25, 2009 – Swansea is preparing to host one of Wales’s most exciting and prestigious visual arts events, the international art biennial Locws International: Art Across The City which takes place from 18 April – 10 May 2009 in public sites across the city.

The exhibition sees 8 artists from Wales, UK and Europe create new temporary artworks that are a direct response to the people, culture, heritage and landscape of Swansea, and for this year’s event all of the artists involved have spent time in the city, investigating its many facets and developing their ideas based on their discoveries.

The artists Tanya Axford, Aisling O'Beirn, Megan Broadmeadow, Neville Gabie, Paul Granjon, Neeme Külm, Marko Mäetamm and Calum Stirling have responded to Swansea in very different ways, picking up on historic and contemporary elements of the city ranging from Swansea’s world famous poet Dylan Thomas and the city’s maritime history to the new multi-million pound architectural developments across the city.

The artworks are all displayed in public spaces across the centre of the city and are free and open to all to view. Amongst the exhibits there are large, outdoor sculptural installations referencing scenes from Swansea’s famous ceramics; an enigmatic arrival in Dylan Thomas Square; a colourful sculpture floating in the Marina dock and a sonic performance on the sail bridge with a 20-strong dance company.

“All of the artists involved have been inspired by Swansea’s past, present and future to create vibrant new artworks that respond, challenge and reflect aspects of the city. Locws International therefore not only presents a current snapshot of contemporary art practice but also presents a unique reflection of the spirit of this city at this time.” said Project Manager Grace Davies.

In addition to the works of art, there is a programme of tours, talks and events that are open to all and free to attend. An information hub will be located at the National Waterfront Museum on Oystermouth Road, where free brochures and maps of all the exhibits are available. For further information visit www.artacrossthecity.com.

Locws International works with international and Welsh contemporary artists to create new visual artworks and projects that respond to the culture and heritage of the city of Swansea. With Support from The Arts Council of Wales, The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The City & County of Swansea.
