It seemed just like any other night out in Beverly Hills 90210, the enclave of Los Angeles, California known for its high-end Rodeo Drive shopping, restaurants and hotels. Dr. Simon Ourian was enjoying a quiet dinner out with his wife.
Like a scene from a movie there was a commotion and Dr. Ourian heard those famous words: “Is there a doctor in the house?” Rushing over to the gathering crowd Dr. Ourian quickly assessed the situation; an older gentleman was thrashing about on the floor clearly gasping for air. “I spent some time in the ER during medical school and all that experience came rushing back to me. Priority number one is getting a clear airway. The brain can only survive for so long if it’s deprived of oxygen”, explained Dr. Ourian. “It was apparent to me that something was lodged in this gentleman’s throat. I reached in my fingers and pulled out a piece of meat. Immediately the gentleman gasped for air.”
“I’d also like to credit the paramedics of the Beverly Hills Fire Department for their rapid response. It seemed like only a minute passed and they were by my side readying the gentleman for transport to Cedars Sinai Hospital.” It was only later that Dr. Ourian that the man whose life he’d saved was the Deputy Mayor of Beverly Hills Mayor.
“It’s nothing you ever expect outside a hospital emergency room but this is what my medical training has prepared me for”, says Dr. Ourian. “I’m not a hero”, he modestly adds.
Dr. Ourian continues: “I’m very grateful to the American Heart Association for this award and I’d like to use this opportunity to urge everyone to sign up for the CPR, AED and first aid training offered by the American Red Cross. Most Americans hear about Red Cross when it’s providing disaster relief at the scene of an earthquake or hurricane or most famously raising tsunami disaster relief fund.
