Giving pregnant mothers Mannesium sulphate when they are at risk of very preterm birth can help protect their babies from cerebral palys according to an interantional review of reseaarch involving the university of adelaide Australia

The Chrane Liary -could Help decrease the incidence of this disabling condition, Which affects one in 500 newborn babies overall and one in 10 very premature babies( less then 28 weeks gestrations )
Magnesium sulphate theraphy involves giving doses of magnesium sulphate to pregnent women via injections.
The potencial for magnesium sulthate to descrease the risk of cerebral palsy in babies was first proposed in the early 1990s. The new Cochrane review this suggetion was carried out by leading researches from Australia ,France University Hospital and United states University of Aldebama.
The review involved data from 6145 babies included in five trials of antenatal magnesium sulphate theraphy.
" For infants born very premature, there is a high risk of cerebral palsy " says onr researchers, professor caroline crowther, Director of the Uneversity of Adelaide's Australia Research Center of Women andBabies.
Tis ochrane review shows there is now evidence of suport giving magnesium sulphate therapy to women of risk of very preterm birth to increase their unborn baby's chance of survial , free of cerebral palsy "
The ect machanism of magnesium sulphate in protecting the developing brain is not certain.However, magnesum is vital for normal cell fuction,may protect agaist destructive molecules that can harm cells and in some circumtances imroves blood flow.
" Given the positive findings of the Cochrane review, Futher studies will need to be conducted to clarify exactly how magnesium sulphate work as a neuroprotective agent, who should received the medications and how best the treatment should be given ,"
