What is the desired shape for breasts?
Because women's breasts are not all the same, the final desired shape and size varies from patient to patient. For some women, a rounder breast implant provides the best results; for others, the final result is an augmentation shaped like a teardrop. Many women choose round implants because they tend to provide the greatest amount of lift, fullness, and cleavage. Some women, however, feel that the results produced with round implants appear artificial, so they seek out more natural-looking alternatives. A teardrop breast implant favours fullness at the lower part of the breast. Most of my breast implant patients are equally concerned with the filling the upper portion of the breast to create some fullness up top. A round breast implant tends to create fullness throughout the breast.
What shapes can you provide?
The final appearance of breasts post Macrolane is highly dependent on the experience and training of the doctor who performs the procedure. This is important whenever you are considering the final projection or profile of your breast. Of the differing breast profile shapes, the round one tends to be the most common type used during augmentation. Patients like it because it can enhance the forward projection in the upper poles of the breasts, giving a cleavage effect. For women who desire fullness breasts, the round breast implant is a good choice. Teardrop breast contouring leaves a final design of your breast that looks like it is shaped like a teardrop on side profile. Your breasts attain a more gently sloping contour. Using the B+ method you can still work with the doctor to design the final cleavage. This is not possible with teardrop surgical implants. Therefore close consultation with a doctor has extensive experience in M+ augmentation is highly advisable before a final decision about breast contouring is made.
Why is M+ technique better?
M+ breast contouring through the use of Macrolane naturally increases one's breast size. And while all breast augmentation patients have great concerns about the final size they want to be, we have found through experience that many are also concerned about the final shape as well.
M+ teardrop breast contouring is shaped exactly as the name implies. The design is sloped from top to bottom with the fullest part of the filler material at the bottom of the prosthesis. As mentioned above, this fullness can be used to increase forward projection in much the same manner as a perfectly proportioned natural breast. But the big advantage is the fact that the doctor can still redefine you cleavage area after the product has been placed.
M+ contouring also provides greater flexibility in final projection by volume on older patients who have lost upper gland tissue due to breast feeding or patients who have developed sagging skin. If you require more cleavage in the upper poles of your breasts or more volume in the sides, this is easily attained by the addition of more Macrolane product.
For women who want more naturally shaped teardrop breasts, M+ contouring may be the ideal choice.
The M+ technique
One of the most important things about the Treacy M+ technique is the concept of breast profiling. Profiling of a breast involves altering the shape by changing the height and width ratio and it is a relatively new and additional consideration that prospective patients need to consider.. However, patients should be aware that the profile of a breast is but one contributing factor to the final breast shape. For a start, the tightness or looseness of the existing breast size and the amount of Macrolane required to fill the sides may be more important. For example, younger women with small tight A or B cup breasts often require extra teardrop shaping to prevent them ending up with a round ‘headlamp’
How much Macrolane is enough?
I suppose that no-one really knows as yet. We have used up to 150mls per breast with the M+ technique with no problems. A key concept with Macrolane is that a proper breast augmentation does not force tissues to where they have never been or were never intended to go. An optimum implant either optimally fills the space present or stretches tissues no further than they are likely to stretch with a pregnancy. For women who have never been pregnant, the surgeon must estimate a normal amount of stretch that would occur with pregnancy, given each woman's breast tissue characteristics.
What happens during a M+ procedure?
Breast contouring during a M+ procedure involves making a tiny incision underneath the breast and placing about 100mls of product in a space between the breast tissue and the muscle. This process is carried out under a local anaesthetic and you do not need to stay over. You will also need to wear a special supportive bra in the first few weeks after the procedure. Because a small amount of product is used compared to breast implants there is usually no pain from stretching the tissues, but some patients describe the post procedure feeling in the next few days as similar to having had a work-out in the gym.
Rest is important to the healing process, so do it as much as possible following your procedure. Drink plenty of fluids, and be sure to take the doctor's prescribed medications, which may contain some prophylactic anti-biotics. There are usually no stitches required and after several days, the gauze dressing will be removed. You may be required to wear a support bra to help your breasts form and maintain a pleasing, balanced shape. You are usually able to shower. You will probably be able to resume exercise and normal physical activities within a week or two, when the soreness has subsided.
