GQ Editor Dylan Jones has said there are opportunities for creative new business startups even during an economic downturn.
Speaking to over 120 potential graduate entrepreneurs at the FlyingStart Rally (see http://www.flyingstartonline.com) and Creative Careers Fair at the University of Derby last week, Mr Jones revealed how he graduated from Saint Martins School of Art during a recession in the early 1980s.
"The economic downturn in the 1980s was one of the most creative periods," he said. "People were starting record labels, magazines and nightclubs. There was a huge vacuum for cultural enterprises to fill. Therefore a creative groundswell took place."
The arts, design and technology students heard Dylan, Editor for a decade of Gentleman's Quarterly (GQ) - the leading magazine at the top of the men's market, talk about the career breaks he has had, the unpredictability of magazine publishing and fashion tips for the 21st century gentleman.
Dylan explained how his big break came from seizing an opportunity:
He gave his top four tips for success as:
1. Luck
2. Hard work
3. Following your instincts
4. Dedicating yourself to not doing what everyone else does.
