Creativity is an essential part of success in today’s world. Legendary advertising executive George Lois, puts it this way: “Creativity can solve almost any problem. The defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything.” And yet, schools have slashed their art programs, and most parents struggle to find an environment that allows their children the freedom to experiment and imagine.

The Crucible, now the largest public industry and arts facility on the west coast, offers courses not available in public schools, traditional summer camps and art studios in  their 56,000 square foot workspace.  Forges roar, sparks fly, and  young people learn responsibility as they acquire new skills and confidence in a supportive environment.  A variety of age-appropriate classes are available for students 8 to 18.  This year the program has been expanded to four sessions, with new classes and a choice of a full-day or a half-day of summer fun at The Crucible:

JUNE 15th  – 19th
JUNE 29th – JULY 3rd
JULY  27th – 31st
AUGUST 17th  – 21st

Hands-on classes have a low student-to-instructor ratio to ensure that each student receives personal attention.  All these youth classes are designed for beginners:

Super Sculpture, Wire Jewelry: Intro to Bling, Ceramics: Mudslinging Madness, Extreme Gizmos, Radical Robots, Exploration in Metal Jewelry, Welding, Blacksmithing, Sand Casting in Aluminum, Intro to Neon, Glass Flameworking,  Fused Glass & Mosaic Mania, Woodcarving, Jazzy Clay Jewelry.

Classes run in the morning from 9AM to 12PM and in the afternoon from 1PM to 4PM, so you can create either a full day or half day experience for your youngster.

New this year, by popular demand, any youth 12 or over who wants to get down with a torch to customize their own bicycle can enroll in a new 5-day summer workshop:  Youth Frame Alteration – Hyphy Bike.  Choose from two sessions, June 15-19th or June 29th – July 3rd; the class runs from 9 to 4PM. Students will learn basic fabrication skills in MIG welding, Oxy/Acetylene torch, and finishing techniques, along with general and specific safety training necessary to reconstruct their bicycles. They will strip the bicycle frames and learn to redesign and alter handlebars, rims, seat posts, and frames to create a unique, hip, one-of-a-kind look that will make them the talk of the neighborhood. Students are required to bring their own bicycle to transform.

Find full descriptions of classes and register online at www.thecrucible.org.  Click on “Youth Classes and Camps.”  Guided tours of our studio facilities are given every Tuesday or Thursday evenings at 6:00.
