PRLog (Press Release) - Mar 17, 2009 -
With 500 million plant pots being used every year by gardeners UK wide, gardening experts at Riverside garden centre, are advising the green fingered to invest in environmentally alternatives, to reduce waste and the impact on the planet- after all the plastic plant pot is one of wildlife’s deadly sins and equivalent to the shoppers plastic bag!
Penny Wright, manager at the company who offer everything from barbeques to garden supplies, said, “Plastic plant pots really are an environmental hazard, and are currently causing a huge waste problem, as gardeners will often pile broken ones up in their gardens at home or send them to be incinerated or to landfill sites.  More should be done to make use of biodegradable planting.”

The manufacturing process of plastics often takes up four per-cent of the worlds annual oil production, creating huge implications for the environment and it therefore makes much more sense to use paper pots or peat pots which are easily biodegradable.  Priced at just £1.99 for a pack of 20 from Riverside Garden Centre, there really is no excuse for choosing its more harmful counterpart this summer.

Mrs Wright, from the company who offer garden supplies, barbeque equipment and garden furniture added, “Biodegradable pots are increasingly popular especially with organic gardeners.  These products can be made from coir, woodchips or even seaweed, and there are varieties that can even be planted directly into the soil, where they will gradually disappear.”

Plastic plant pots do not have insulating properties and this means that your plants are particularly vulnerable to extremes of hot and cold, and what’s more, plastic pots can become brittle and fade in colour and recognition over time.

As well as swapping harmful materials around the garden in favour of more environmentally friendly alternatives, it is essential to take care of the wildlife that may reside there and for any avid gardener, it is essential that after removing harmful plastic plant pots with sharp edges, that you cater to their needs.

Mrs Wright added, “Bird care should not be overlooked by those looking to bring wildlife into their garden, and this can be particularly lovely if you have small children, who are keen to learn about nature.  Investing in a bird box or birdhouse is a very cost effective way to achieve this, and good solutions can be picked up from as little at £6.99.  Our Robin Premium Nest Box is one of our best sellers at the moment and priced at just £11.99, you can make sure that looking after nature really is affordable.”
