The official voice for the Vatican, the daily Osservatore Romano, recently published a cage rattling statement for International Women’s Day, when it answered the question "In the 20th century, what contributed most to the emancipation of western women"?
The attention grabbing headline screamed "The washing machine and the emancipation of women: put in the powder, close the lid and relax".
After a lengthy tribute to the washing machine, the Osservatore talked of the housewife in glowing terms as "The image of the super woman, smiling, made up and radiant among the appliances of her house".
The Vatican completely ignored, sex fairness, equal education and equal opportunities in the work place Social changes in Western countries, political and technological advances were not even considered. IN the Vatican’s view, the pill, the liberalization of abortion, working outside the home, or the washing machine were the probable causes of giving women freedom in the 20th century.
“The washing machine has had a greater liberating role for women than the pill,” maintained the Osservatore. The daily paper went one step further quoting the words of the late American feminist Betty Friedan, “Now women will be able to change the sheets on the beds twice a week instead of once a week."
How many washing machines are there in the male dominated Vatican city? Is it the male or female staff which have the liberating use of these machines?
