The average amount a Brit owes their energy provider is 11 per cent higher than it was this time last year, according to uSwitch.com.
This means that a typical in-debt consumer will now owe their supplier £126, compared to £114 in 2008.
More than half (52 per cent) of those in debt to their energy supplier owe a greater amount than they did this time last year.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the website, predicts that there will be further energy price hikes later this year.
She said: “The danger is that consumers will cancel their direct debit because they cannot afford the increases, but will then end up paying more for their energy because they will lose valuable direct debit discounts.”
The problem of energy poverty highlights an urgent need for better Loft Insulation in homes so that energy usage can be reduced and bills slashed.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, today advised that “the easiest and most efficient way to track the cost of your energy bill is to move to a tariff with an online account”.
