Starr and Cassie
South Burlington, VT — One could say that Starr Jewell has gone to the dogs...literally. A Vermont native with more than 20 years of experience as a marketing professional, Starr pulls double duty for Therapy Dogs of Vermont — the local non-profit organization to which she donates her creative services and with which she shares the unconditional love of her Bernese Mountain Dog, Cassie.
Therapy Dogs of Vermont (TDV) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization of well-mannered, sweet-tempered, people-loving dogs and their handlers. The teams visit children in hospitals, the elderly in nursing or retirement homes, and others in need who might gain a little unconditional love, which has been shown to improve the mental and physical well-being of humans of all ages.
Starr’s involvement with Therapy Dogs of Vermont began when she and Cassie, a 4-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, became a therapy dog team. “I absolutely love the experience of visiting with children and elders. Everyone needs a friend and Cassie is wonderful at bringing smiles to their faces”.
Not long thereafter, Starr, owner of Starr Jewell Marketing Services, realized there were other ways she could help and began lending her marketing expertise and creative services to the organization at no charge. Starr and Cassie remain an active therapy dog team, making visits to Fletcher Allen Health Care, The Converse Home, Shelburne Bay, Pillsbury Manor, and other facilities that care for and/or house children and adults of all ages with various medical or special needs. On March 31st, Starr will begin a special 11-week training course that will allow her to bring the benefits of canine companionship to those in hospice care.
